The story begins with an inter-racial group who first met in 1939 to plan how they might hold Hawaii together in the event of a war between Japan and the United States. They worked selflessly behind the scenes through 1945, at which point everyone went their separate ways. Their work was forgotten, but the result was that Hawaii avoided the disastrous internment and actually came out of World War II with its people better acquainted and more united.
More than a Japanese American story, The First Battle is an American story about how a multi-racial community worked with a vulnerable minority in time of great crisis. The story speaks to our time. This is the first film of Henri Hiro published on DVD.
Writing at the end of 1982 and turned in July 1983, this film of Henri Hiro recalls the ceremony of establishment of a young king on the marae Arahurahu de Paea. Unit of time, unity of place, the film sticks to the detail of this ceremony of antan with all the record which one can imagine. It is far from sunny. Also, in order to have a homogeneous light all along film, we turned only two to three hours per day when the clouds did not play with our nerves. At the time we turned in 16mm, with only one camera, not of multi cameras like today. Henri Hiro had entirely cut out his film, not of place for the improvisation". More than 200 actors, dancers, musicians and observers will take part in reconstitution. The dances were chorégraphiées by Coco Hotahota, and the songs interpreted by the group Tereia de Penina.
