But she finds he (a sugar cane worker) has deceived her with a 20 year old photo, and "paradise" offers only grueling hard work. She refuses to consummate the marriage and goes to work in the fields to earn money for her passage home, but it doesn't work out as intended. A moving drama of Hawaii's immigrant past. [1995 - Temuera Morrison, Rena Owen - color - 102 minutes] A brutal, but  brilliant and deeply affecting drama. In the slums of New Zealand, a Maori woman struggles to keep her family together while trapped in poverty and domestic violence. One son is joining a gang who tattoo their faces and one son is in juvenile detention. But at 14, daughter Grace retains her sweetness of spirit, writes Maori stories, and cares for her siblings. However he finds nothing but trouble when he falls for a local surfer's beautiful cousin. Filmed on location on Oahu's North Shore, it provides a detailed look at island life including beach houses, a sleepy plantation village, and an ancient heiau (temple). At the couple's Hawaiian luau engagement party violence erupts and after terrible tragedies the characters have to rethink their values. [1962 - Marlon Brando,Trevor Howard, Richard Harris,Tarita, Matahiarii Tami - color - 186 minutes] Nominated for 7 Academy awards. This version of the infamous mutiny is filled with lots of breathtaking cinematography of Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, near the actual locales where the events took place, plus 5,000 native "extras". Brando portrays Fletcher Christian as an English fop up against Trevor Howards' quiet and reasonable Captain Bligh. Anthropologists and cultural experts were hired to ensure authenticity. Brando had a real life romance with actress/dancer Tarita, whom he had two children with.

[1935 - Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, Mamo Clark, Franchot Tone, Movita - black&white - 132 minutes] In 1787 the Bounty sails to Tahiti under the command of the sadistic Captain Bligh (Laughton). They finally reach Tahiti where the crew fall in love with the native women. After their departure Fletcher Christian (Gable) leads the crew in mutiny. Won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Gable, Laughton, and Tone were all nominated for Best Actor.

[1951 - Van Johnson, Gianna Maria Canale, Kane Nakano, George Miki, Akira Fukunaga - black&white - 90 minutes] The true experiences of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up of Japanese-Hawaiians who were honored for their bravery in Europe. Van Johnson plays a very prejudiced Texan assigned to the regiment who gradually learns to respect the men's valor and bravery.  The cast includes many of the actual 442nd veterans and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Academy Award.
