Each year hundreds of dedicated male and female dancers, chanters, and musicians gather in Hilo Hawaii to perform in spectacular authentic costumes and floral adornments. There are stirring kahiko (ancient style hula) and colorful 'auana (modern style hula). The winners are then selected by a panel of the world's leading experts on hula. For forty-three years, thousands of the best hula halau from all across the Hawaiian islands, mainland, and Japan have been invited to the prestigious Merrie Monarch Festival. Since 1976 this festive three-night celebration, held at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, has provided an opportunity for Hawaii's children to competitively demonstrate their achievement in the art of Hula. Over 500 amazingly talented and graceful youngsters ages 6-12, from some of Hawaii's finest Hula Halaus, perform both ancient Kahiko and traditional modern style Auana hulas in colorful authentic costumes. Each July French Polynesia celebrates French Independence/Bastille Day with festivals ("Fete") that include colorful competitions in all categories of Tahitian dance. Over 200 of California's finest Tahitian dancers continue this tradition annually.
